Bihar intern doctors protesting for being underpaid

Intern Doctors of PMCH Patna Stage Peaceful Protest Against Inadequate StipendPatna, 22 August 2025:The intern doctors of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) today conducted a peaceful protest by wearing black bands, raising their voice against the extremely low stipend currently being paid.At present, interns in Bihar are receiving ₹20,000 per month, which amounts to approximately ₹650 per day—a sum comparable to daily wage workers. In the current inflationary situation, this remuneration is insufficient for survival. The interns have placed a demand of ₹40,000 per month stipend, in line with fair compensation and to ensure dignity for young doctors dedicating themselves to patient care.It is important to note that there is a provision for stipend revision every three years for both postgraduate trainees and interns. However, despite this mandate, the revision has not been implemented, leaving the stipend stagnant for years. For comparison, stipends in other states are significantly higher: • West Bengal: ₹43,000/month • Odisha: ₹40,000/month • IGIMS, Patna: ₹32,000/monthDespite repeated appeals, including formal letters submitted to the Hon’ble Health Minister and the Health Secretariat, no response has been received so far.The interns emphasize that while today’s demonstration was peaceful, if the Bihar Government continues to ignore their genuine demands, the protest will intensify. As a next step, closure of OPD services across all medical colleges of Bihar may begin from Tuesday, which could severely impact healthcare services in the state.“Our fight is not just for money, but for respect and survival,” the interns stated, urging the government to take immediate action to revise the stipend structure and bring Bihar at par with other states.PRESS RELEASEIntern Doctors of PMCH Patna Stage Peaceful Protest Against Inadequate StipendPatna, 22 August 2025:The intern doctors of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) today conducted a peaceful protest by wearing black bands, raising their voice against the extremely low stipend currently being paid.At present, interns in Bihar are receiving ₹20,000 per month, which amounts to approximately ₹650 per day—a sum comparable to daily wage workers.
